The BeansBox Team
We had the privilege of working with The New York Times in designing their first ever non-English language edition, available online at cn.nytimes.com and beta launched in summer 2012.
The new site is edited specifically for readers in China, featuring translated material of the English edition as well as original work by Chinese writers contributing to the Times. The goal is to provide China’s growing number of educated, affluent, global citizens with high-quality coverage of world affairs, business and culture.
Working with the Times' project team in Shanghai and in-house design team in New York in fast iterations, we created a set of key page designs based on draft wireframes and passed them to their production team for site build.
As much of the New York Times distinctive design will never change, the job in designing this site was an exercise in subtlety and detail, with much care being put into tweaking typography, content types and balancing layouts and usability to accommodate the different audience and new material.
