From its humble beginnings at a Harvard dorm to a multi-billion application that attracts hundreds of millions of followers, Facebook has indeed become a more ubiquitous social media application everybody seems to be familiar with. Behind the wall rants, likes and friend requests are interesting pieces of information about Facebook.

User base

There are more than 400 million Facebook users and more than 100 million of them (me included) accesses Facebook via smart phone. Half of the active users are logged in to Facebook everyday.

User activity and content media

Facebook users upload 3 billion photos each month. 5 billion pieces of content (blogs, web links, blog posts, photo albus, etc) are shared each month. More than 20 million of them become fans of Facebook pages each day.

User stats

Average user has 130 friends (not that having 849 friends makes me above average) and sends 8 friend requests, writes 25 comments and clicks the Like button 9 times a month. On average, a user spends about 55 minutes at Facebook a day (now that's one reason time flies so quickly).

Blocked and banned access

While Facebook has made leaps and bounds in internationalization -- about 70 per cent of users are outside of the United States and the website is available to more than 70 different languages including Azeri, Faroese, Georgian and Nepali, certain countries ban/block Facebook. China blocks its access and Syria bans its use to prevent false teachings about war and religion. Vietnam and Iran also ban Facebook.

Youngest billionaire

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg is the youngest billionaire (at 1.5 billion dollars and counting) and it's not surprising at all.

No breastfeeding, we're social media

Facebook does not like to see photos of mothers breastfeeding their babies. Any photo uploaded will be deleted.

One sticky website

Americans spent 13.9 billion minutes on Facebook while only 5 billion minutes on MySpace. Facebookland If Facebook is a country, it would be the fifth largest in the world, after China, India, United States and Indonesia. Legally valid

In Australia it is valid protocol to serve court notices to defendants on Facebook. A summons posted on Facebook is legally binding. Facebook has also provided hints and led to arrest of offenders and criminals.
