Google Search Update: New Features Available

As a follow up to the article I posted on my other blog about Google Searchology, Google has updated its search results so that it now allows users to filter them according to whether they are visited already or not yet visited.

This is how it works: for example, you search for "ajisen ramen", and visited several results pages but you are not contented because all don't have your desired information. You refine your search phrase to "ajisen ramen hong kong" and review the search results. You're not happy with the experience because you still find the same results as they are relevant to your keyword phrase. With not much luck, you again revise your search phrase. With the new feature, Google allows you to dig deeper into the results.

Visited and Not yet visited pages

By default Google displays all pages -- whether or not you have visited them already. If you want to recall which pages you visited using that phrase, you can click on the "Visited pages" link. Otherwise, select "Not yet visited" link and don't have to see again links to pages you have visited before (and don't find them helpful at all).

Shopping sites display

Not only that, Google now also allows users to customize search results based on whether they are shopping results or not. By default, it is "Standard Results" but if you want fewer (or no) results from shopping sites, simply select "Fewer shopping sites". But if you prefer to compare products, you would probably want to click "More shopping sites" to see more product-related results to compare with each other.

Time-specific results

If you want to know about the latest news on a certain topic (Floods in Manila or Quake in Sumatra), you may want to select results based on how recently they were posted on the Web. It may be within the last 24 hours, last week or even during a date range when the news exploded and gained prominence.

More Result Types

Google will add News, Books and Blogs in addition to Videos, Forums and Reviews pretty soon. This effectively allows you to segregate results as desired. If I want to find books about Harry Potter, I can soon specify the "Books" option and I would expect books about Harry Potter and not blog about Harry Potter will show up.

These features were built in Google's hope to bring more ease of use and extraction of results faster and more accurately.
